Fritz Lang’s Metropolis On Television Tonight

Back in April, I mentioned that the fully-restored version of Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece “Metropolis” was being released in theaters. I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to see it in the theater, but I am pleased to report that it will be on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 8:00 PM, followed by Metropolis Refound, which looks to be a documentary about how the missing footage was recovered and restored. This movie influenced film making (and especially science fiction film making) for a century, and now it’s got an added half-hour or so of previously-missing footage. Definitely worth checking out!

  1. Thanks, Joe!

I would have hated to miss this, especially with the added footage. I wonder if it will have the restored soundtrack as well? Definitely going to DVR it.

This is on my list of "if stuck on an island" films.

    Ciao!

  2. Yay! It did have Gottfried Huppertz's original score.

Even though I only ever saw the "edited" version of the film, I do enjoy seeing the version originally made, music, scratchy film cells and all. And I prefer subtitles over dubbing anytime in sound films. Whether its Bergman's Seventh Seal or Matsumoto's Space Battleship Yamato, there's something about hearing the actor's own voices that adds to the force of a film.

I digress. The restored version of Metropolis is a must see for any fans of Fritz Lang's films.

  3. I just stumbled upon it on TV last night before I saw this post. I have to say, WOW. It was quite enthralling for a silent movie. Amazing sets and hundreds of extras. An epic before its time.
