Castle of the Mad Archmage Now Available!

At long last, the print version of Castle of the Mad Archmage is now available!

The free serialized version from several years ago has been added to, scrubbed, edited, and generally improved upon. The adventure now is self-contained, from the surface ruins to the dreaded lowest levels, with a separate map book and illustration book (with pictures to show the players what they see at given places in the dungeons). You can get all three of the books that make up this adventure at RPGNow.com:

All three books are available in pdf format as well, and as always you get a free pdf copy when you order the hard copy books. The adventure book was written with the Adventures Dark and Deep rules in mind, which means it can easily be used with most OSR-type rules.

You can get get the whole set for $20 pdf, $35 with a softcover adventure book, and $45 with a hardcover adventure book (the map and illustration books are only available in softcover).

It’s been a long time getting here, but I hope you have as much fun with it as I have over the years.

  1. Sweet! I ran some people through the Castle (as originally posted) on D&D's 40th. Many a death. 😀

I'm a little unclear on how this works: If I order the hardcover, all three of the books come with it?

  2. Deluxe package ordered. I cannot wait for this one. Looking forward to it. Only thing that confused me was it gave me 2 separate shipping estimates…. It will welcome whenever it arrives…z

  3. Congratulations upon this release!

I bought the hardback combo of books (2 softcovers & hardcover adventure book) along with the PDF's. I look forward to reading these ASAP this weekend and receiving them in due time via the mail.

    All the best!

  4. Excellent!

I have the full collection of your original files printed out in a folder and I really enjoyed them.

I've just ordered the three books in hard copy and have the pdfs downloading. I'm looking forward to delving into it!

  5. And ordered!

BTW, I found the previously free PDF version on RPGGeek, the poster probably does not realise that the free version of the PDF has been removed. For me seeing that material convinced me that the dungeon is worth my 35 dollars for a print version!

  6. If say I had the Castle Zagyg: Upper Works, does your Castle of the Mad Archmage in any way mesh/line up with the layout of the levels below the Storerooms Level?

  7. When it was originally made available as a free pdf, that was the intention, Greg. With the new version, the layout of the stairs from level 1 to level 2 did not change. It certainly wasn't the intent with the new version, but I suppose that lining up of the staircases would have carried forward. None of the text refers to anything in Castle Zagyg, of course, but it didn't in the original, either.

  8. Sorry if this comes through twice (feel free to delete any duplicate).

I ordered the hardcopy of the book and the soft copy of the maps and illustration books from RPGNow and the only pdf download options available were for the map and illustration books – NOT for the adventure book. Is this intended or is RPGNow experiencing problems?

  9. Charley – could you have ordered the book only? There are two options, the book and the book+pdf. You might have had the wrong one selected when you added it to your cart.

I'd get in touch with the RPGNow customer service folks, and see if they can fix it. The price is exactly the same, so there's no reason *not* to get the book+pdf.

  10. Hmm, the option was not there when I ordered but it is now. I'll contact RPGNow and see if they will allow me the download. Thanks!

  11. The folks at RPGNow took care of me. Thanks for the input. I look forward to reading and running this. I have a party in Castle Zagyg now… 🙂
